My friend, Bill, “The Gentle Miner” of Brazil, is temporarily back here in the states, and will be coming to Gloucester, Massachusetts on April 17, 2013. He will bring some Brazilian rough stones and cutting material that will be available for purchase. The material is perfect for artists, sculptors who work in stone, stone cutters and jewelry makers. Bill has a great affinity for stones and crystals, and tremendous respect and reverence for the earth. His stones and crystals are simply beautiful!

This visit will be primarily for those who work with stones creatively, or who incorporate stones or crystals in their art. If you would like to arrange to meet with him during his short visit to Massachusetts, please email me at Terry@thestonelady.net, or call me at 978-283-7532.

We do expect he will return at a later date, probably early summer, and will bring some hand-mined, gently harvested crystals with him. At that time, he will be happy to meet with collectors, healers, and others who love or use stones and crystals.

Red Jasper Crystal Skull (stone of the week)

The stone that represents the underlying energies of the week beginning April 7, 2013 is a Red Jasper Crystal Skull, sometimes also known as Poppy Jasper or Bracciated Jasper. Red Jasper is considered a stone with great protective energy. Many consider it to be a stone of justice.

“Red Jasper People” tend to have great passion and a strong connection with and respect for the earth. Many “Red Jasper People” pride themselves on being fair, rational, reasonable, and courageous. Their work is often behind the scenes, and a “Red Jasper Person” does not always get the recognition that they deserve.

In our society skulls are frequently associated with death; however, this was not always the case. Many ancient cultures viewed a crystal skull as a means of honoring life. The human skull was considered a symbol of great awareness. Skulls were the essence of humanity, often associated with time, power, and initiations. In Celtic cultures, skulls symbolized divinity, and were honored and revered. Skulls were thought to be the place where the soul resided.

When one of my stone skulls comes up during a Stone Reading, I usually suggest that the individual may be over-thinking something. It may be time to acknowledge how one “feels” rather than focusing exclusively on what one “thinks.” Although admittedly it is easier said than done, during the week ahead do your best to avoid over-thinking, over-stressing, over-analyzing, and over-worrying! Relax and enjoy! Although you have a great brain, pay a little more attention to your “gut instincts” and what you feel in your heart during the week ahead.

When one looks at the Red Jasper Skull, or any human skull, one sees the unmistakable image of the human face. The week ahead will provide opportunities with the potential to leave us feeling more powerful and in touch with our divinity and spirituality! For the week ahead, consider the Red Jasper Skull to be a confirmation that you are courageous, you are passionate, you are safe and protected, and you are ready to “face” whatever lies ahead of you.

Mahogany Obsidian (stone of the week)

Stone of the Week: 3/31/13 Mahogany Obsidian

The stone that represents the energies for the week beginning March 31, 2013 is a brown and black egg-shaped stone known as Mahogany Obsidian, which I selected from my assortment of egg-shaped stones in honor of Easter.

Many years ago, when first becoming aware of all the magic tucked away inside various Rock Shops, I picked up a chunk of Mahogany Obsidian, examined it, instantly decided that I MUST have this rock, and excitedly showed it to my friend. To my utter amazement, she didn’t share my enthusiasm, muttered something about this treasure being “just glass” and continued with what she was doing. It didn’t take long for me to realize that even if it was “just glass,” the Mahogany Obsidian that I had stumbled upon was a beautiful and unique gem!

Mahogany Obsidian, a natural volcanic glass, is a product of rapidly cooling magma with minimal crystal growth. Because of a high concentration of iron, it has reddish-brown coloring, with black inclusions, and resembles fine grains of mahogany wood.

I have written about various Obsidians in a earlier “stone of the week” postings, pointing out that most people do not understand or “get” an “Obsidian Person.” Those drawn to Obsidian will go out of their way to assist others, motivated by a sincere desire to lend a hand. Unfortunately, their actions are often questioned, misjudged, misinterpreted or misunderstand. Thus, an “Obsidian Person” who voluntarily stays late in a sincere effort to help a co-worker get caught up is immediately perceived as someone who is “bucking for a promotion” or “purposely making the rest of us look lazy,” or in some way, shape or form, is not to be trusted!

As with other Obsidians, those drawn to Mahogany Obsidian are passionate, and place a high value on friendship. They may claim or believe they have only a handful of friends, yet there are dozens who cherish relationships formed with “Mahogany Obsidian People.” Those drawn to Mahogany Obsidian have no idea what extraordinary individuals they truly are!

“Mahogany Obsidian People” feel a deep connection to the forests and have a profound reverence and respect for trees. They genuinely enjoy children, and are born “Story Tellers,” able to teach children important moral lessons without resorting to fear or the aid of ‘ugly step-mothers’ and ‘wicked witches.’

This particular Mahogany Obsidian was cut and polished to look like an egg. It symbolizes new beginnings, things going on just beneath the surface, changes that are about to happen, periods where extra protection may be needed, and life itself.

”If an egg is broken by outside force, LIFE ends. If broken by inside force, LIFE begins. Great things always begin from inside!” Jim Kwik.

In the words of C. S. Lewis, “It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.”

As an undercurrent for the week ahead, consider a walk in the woods as a beginning step to reconnecting with nature! Pay special attention to the trees, whose roots extend deep into the earth, and whose branches reach high into the heavens!

You may be faced with important or time sensitive decisions this week. Act on them to the best of your ability, yet realize that it is difficult to please everyone. Some of us may feel as if we are slowly “coming out of our shells” this week, while others will welcome a much anticipated break-through.

There may well be people who do not understand us, who might not “get” us, or who do not see things our way. Do not let what others may think about you to become more important than what YOU think about you! Remain true to yourself and your principles this week!

Malachite (stone of the week)

Stone of the Week: Malachite
The stone that represents the underlying energies for the week beginning March 24, 2013 is Malachite, a beautiful green banded stone that archaeological evidence indicates may have been mined as early as the 10th century BC.

In ancient Egypt, Malachite was used to create jewelry. It was ground into a powder for use as eye shadow. Throughout history, Malachite has been used as a mineral pigment in green paints, a veneer for tabletops, and in the making of fireplaces, tea sets, jewelry, and even caskets. Today, the mineral Malachite is mined primarily for its copper content, and in addition to a gem used in jewelry, Malachite is used in electronic equipment, appliances, ammunition, and coins.

Lore and legends associated with Malachite include the belief that it could protect against the evil eye. Malachite was considered a calming, balancing, and healing stone that protected travelers and children, even breaking to warn of impending danger. In Russian lore, people believed that anyone who drank from a goblet made of Malachite would be blessed with the power to understand the language of animals. In ancient Greece, Malachite was the gem associated with Venus, Goddess of love. Many people consider Malachite a good stone to work with for manifesting and attracting prosperity and abundance.

I have always considered the green stone Malachite to be a stone of transformation, in part because it is found in close proximity to Azurite, a blue stone which often undergoes a metamorphosis to become the green stone Malachite. Those who are drawn to Malachite tend to be very private. Although they are willing to share once they are comfortable with a person, a “Malachite Person” can be secretive and will usually be self-protective.“Malachite People” have wonderful senses of humor, and are not afraid to make themselves the butt of a joke if it helps to raise the energy for others. They are creative, and enjoy surprising others, although it is difficult for others to surprise a “Malachite Person.” Those who are drawn to Malachite are usually very resourceful, and able to process clues that many of us miss, helping them to find solutions we might overlook. They also tend to have an appreciation for nature, and the elementals or nature spirits.

As a stone for the coming week, Malachite suggests an element of celebrating the finishing or completion of a project. There will likely be an eagerness to move forward, or to take a fresh look at how one’s dreams and goals are progressing.

I would expect that the week ahead will find many of us feeling more at peace, more balanced, and with a partial awareness that on some level – personal, physical, business, financial, emotional, spiritual – a healing and personal transformation has begun. It may be wise not to take ourselves too seriously this week, and to find opportunities to laugh “with” not “at” others, as it appears that a sense of humor will be invaluable!

Septarian (stone of the week)

SEPTARIAN: Stone of the Week 3/17/13

To select this week’s “stone of the week” I closed my eyes, raised my hand a few inches above my Stone Reading tray, and selected Septarian to represent the energies for the week beginning March 17, 2013. Septarian is usually composed of yellow Calcite, brown Aragonite, and grey Limestone, although other minerals, including Pyrite and Chalcedony, can be present. Septarian is sometimes referred to as “Dragon Stone,” and was formed millions of years ago at a time when the Gulf of Mexico extended into what is now Southern Utah.

Septarians are considered a mineralogical oddity whose formation is not completely understood. An admittedly over-simplified theory is that following volcanic eruptions, Septarian formed as balls of mud, the result of a chemical bonding between the dead sea life and sediment. Tide and wave action rolled the balls around, increasing their size. When the ocean receded, the mud balls dried, their insides shrank, and interesting patterns in all directions were created from the cavities and cracks.

Some believe the stone’s name was derived from the Latin word “septem,” meaning seven, because the cracks within the stone appeared to radiate in seven directions. Others claim the name came from the Latin word “saeptum,” which means an enclosure, wall, or a partition, and refers to the angular cracks and separations inside the stone.

Because of the large amount of yellow calcite in this stone, (and calcite is strongly connected with hope), I would suggest that there are reasons to feel cautiously hopeful about this coming week! The seven points that form the unique patterns common to Septarian suggest that “seven” and things associated with the number seven may be important this week. This can include time periods, such as seven hours, days, weeks, months, etc., or it can indicate things we sometimes associate with seven, including seven notes in a musical scale, seven colors in a rainbow, seven major chakras or energy centers in the body, or simply, the “lucky number seven.”

This particular Septarian fits nicely in the palm of the hand. There are unusual images and markings in this stone, including a brown Aragonite snail-like figure visible in the gray limestone. Snails represent patience, expansion, and awareness. They carry their homes on their back, representing self-sufficiency. During this week, consider what can be done to become more “comfortable in our own skin,” more self-sufficient, or more ‘at home’ with ourselves. Snails are considered unusually slow, yet they can move over two inches per minute, covering a lot of ground relatively quickly. Although we may feel we are not progressing fast enough, we may be making more progress than we realize.

There is a brown image of the letter “Y” in this stone, suggesting the wisdom of asking the right questions, particularly “WHY?” The image of the letter “Y” can suggest that we are approaching a fork in the road, and will soon face important decisions and choices. On the reverse side of the stone, not visible in this photo, the “Y” reconnects to the original brown aragonite lines, forming a diamond shape. As the two lines once again join together, they merge into one solid line. This suggests that although some of us may choose to step off our true path, we may at some point in the future reevaluate our decision, and continue on whichever path is correct for us.

Septarian suggests that, since we will soon have important choices and decisions to make, we may begin questioning and exploring various possibilities or scenarios, using both our intellect and imagination. Realize that at times neither path, neither choice, neither decision is “right” or “wrong,” or even “better than” or “worse than,” merely “different from.”

This markings on Septarian remind me of the Robert Frost poem, “The Road Not Taken,” specifically the lines:

“I shall be telling this with a sigh,

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference!”

During the weeks and months ahead, will you dare to take the road less travelled?

Window Quartz (stone of the week)

Stone of the Week: 3/10/2013 Window Quartz

The stone that represents the underlying energies for the week beginning March 10, 2013 is “Window Quartz,” also known by names that include Seer Stone, Emma Eggs, Dream Stones, Third Eye Stone, and River Tumbled Quartz.

Window Quartz are river-tumbled quartz nodules. Although the stones pictured are clear quartz crystal, it is common to find Window Quartz in Rose Quartz, Amethyst, and Smoky Quartz as well. On the outside of the stone is a natural-appearing frost, created by the minerals present in the water. The stones have been cut and polished, creating a flat see-through surface that resembles a window. One is able to look through this man-made window to see the depth and inner beauty of the stone.

In a stone reading, quartz crystals pertain to one’s sense of self, one’s power, the “I Am,” a person’s identity. I compare it to the sun, with the ability to wake us up, to illuminate and enlighten, or to burn and scorch. It is not unusual for people to compare eyes to windows, using phrases that include “the eyes are the window to your soul.” The Window Quartz suggests that this week will provide unique opportunities to look within, to gain a clearer perspective on that which is ordinarily hidden from view.

Window Quartz is also associated with depth and inner beauty, daring to look beneath the surface and appreciating that which we have Window Quartz can be compared to a “window” that we look or gaze INTO rather than attempt to see OUT OF. As an undercurrent for the week ahead, it suggests that we may find it helpful to be introspective, looking inward, perhaps do some soul searching and self-evaluation.

Windows can also be viewed as an actual physical separations between the outside and the inside. A window can be a passage that leads to and from. It can offer new directions, experiences, paths, insights, and opportunities, as well as a means of escaping.

We might expect this week to have an element of time-sensitive decisions, choices, openings, and opportunities. If you have taken the time to look inward and have an understanding of what you want and need, the appropriate outward actions will be clearer.

During the week ahead, think about what may be blocking you, or preventing you from reaching your goals or turning your dreams into reality. Look for brief openings of “windows” that had previously been closed, or hidden, or even locked. There could be “windows of opportunity” which are not always available to us.
